Doctor Who is back! I have waited nine months for new televised Doctor Who and it didn't disappoint. This episode had many great characters and scenes, so I will go through my best bits. Let's begin! Following on from season 34 (Series 8 to most of us), Peter Capaldi is again playing the Doctor. His character has evolved from someone I didn't care about in Deep Breath to someone I saw really cared about his friends and companions (Dark Water / Death in Heaven). He showed great emotion when Clara was exterminated and really wanted her safe, even considering to commit genocide when in Davros' chair. |
This episode felt more Clara-lite unlike episodes such as The Name of the Doctor, The Day of the Doctor, The Time of the Doctor and Flatline. I am someone who really enjoyed her impossible girl mystery however felt she became too unrealistic and annoying in series 8 with Danny. However, since Last Christmas she has improved in my opinion, and I hope this trend continues with Under the Lake. |
Along with the Doctor and Clara, we were also treated to some more familiar (see what I did there?) faces. These include Kate Stewart, the Shadow Architect, Bors and Ohila. Kate Stewart was again played by Jemma Redgrave, reprising the role from 'The Power of Three', 'The Day of the Doctor' and 'Dark Water / Death in Heaven' and is set to return in 'The Zygon Invasion / The Zygon Inversion' later this year. Overall, she didn't do much and wasn't needed in the story in my opinion, and just acted as someone to bounce off all of Clara's questions. The Shadow Architect was first seen in the 2008 episode 'The Stolen Earth / Journey's End', and again her character did not do much but I still love that scene due to the great music by Murray Gold and sets which look a lot bigger than they probably were. Bors returned in this episode after appearing in the prequel 'The Doctor's Meditation'. I thought his character was interesting and would love to see more of him. |
Now onto the villains. These included the Blowfish, Kahler, Skullion, Judoon, Sycorax, Ood, Hath and a Tivolian. These were all quite good to spot out among the crowd but did little towards the story. The main villains were the Daleks, Missy and Davros. The actor playing the young Davros was amazing in my opinion. Julian Bleach was also on top form and I was surprised that he returned to a role he played once, seven years ago. Missy was very menacing, especially in The Witch's Familiar and I really like her as the Master although I would have preferred Michelle Gomez to have played the Rani. Well, what can you do? The Daleks didn't do much, and I would have liked an explanation to the Black Dalek, because 'Doomsday' states that there is only ever meant to be one black Dalek, which we know is Sec. |
Well, there we go. I hope you enjoyed PedroPete's review. I just want to point out that this doesn't reflect my own views, just his. I personally loved The Magicians Apprentice but was not at all impressed with ' The Witches Familiar'. Meh, such is the joy of opinions. PedroPete will be back soon to take a look at ' Under the Lake (which I thought was amazing).
Until then,
See Ya!
